Growth of Diabetes in Children - 1729 Words

Diabetes is one of the leading chronic causes of deaths in children and adolescent’s in the United States. Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases that is characterized by high levels of glucose in the bloodstream resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action or even both (Overview, 1). Diabetes is a serious health issue and can be associated with premature death or serious complications. Timely diagnosed treatment of diabetes can delay or prevent any onset of long-term complications, such as damage to blood vessels, kidneys, gums, skin, teeth, and many other complications (Overview, 1). Diabetes can be difficult to deal with during the time of adolescence. People with diabetes or those who have family members with diabetes†¦show more content†¦Signs and symptoms of Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents may not show up at all. A child may feel very tired, thirsty, nauseas, and have to often urinate. Additional symptoms may include weight loss, bl urred vision, and slow healing of wounds or sores (Overview, 5). Since symptoms are so varied, it is very important for health care providers to identify and test youth who are at high risk for the diabetes disease (Overview, 5). There are no typical recommendations for blood glucose levels in children with type 2 diabetes. The basics are healthy eating, and increase physical activity. Some strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes is to encourage, support, and educate the importance of a healthy lifestyle (Overview, 5). Type 2 diabetes risk factors are family history in first or second-degree family members. race/ethnicity is also a risk factor in diabetes and if there are any signs of insulin resistance or conditions associated with insulin resistance may be an indicator for type 2 diabetes (Overview, 6). The age to began testing for type 2 diabetes is ten years old or at the onset of puberty if puberty occurs earlier than expected. The diabetes test should be done every 3 years (6). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes that is typically diagnosed during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is more common in obese woman, or women with a family history of Gestational diabetes mellitus.
